Technology has made traveling today so much easier. Sure, it might be a little less adventurous than it used to be since you can rely on your phone for information and support, but, it also gives us access to more things than we’ve ever dreamed of. While there are many apps out there that are great for your tour, these happen to be my favorites!
1) XE Currency App
Will you be using a different currency in the place you’re traveling to? Most likely. The XE Currency app is an easy way to keep track of currency so you know you’re getting the right amount for your money. It’s also a good way to keep track of your spending, as you can quickly check how much something is worth in your own money!
2) Google Maps
While I’m a firm believer in using paper maps to find your way around a city (it’s more fun that way!) I also think it’s good to have a backup. Google Maps is probably one of the most important apps to use while traveling so you can navigate without any issues. Not only can it help you figure out which trains to take and what stops to get off at, you can also star places you want to go/stumbled upon while exploring.
3) Whatsapp
Many people around the world use Whatsapp as a way to communicate without having to spend money on calls or texts. Whenever you have a WiFi connection (or data, if you’re paying for it) you can connect with anyone, anywhere, for free. Call, text, video chat, send pictures or videos, or even voice clips.
4) Uber or Lyft
Not every country has Uber yet, but if they don’t, they generally have their own version of it. You may have heard of Gett or Grab in some places, and each one works more or less the same. I never used Uber until I was abroad, as I never needed in when I was in my home country. But, let me tell you; it’s a lifesaver. If you can’t figure out public transportation, if the buses have stopped for the evening, or you need an easy ride to the airport, you’ll generally find Uber to be much more affordable than taxis. As always, use precautions with Uber as you would with a taxi or another form of public transportation.
5) Google Translate
Another life saver, Google Translate is there to help you order your favorite drink, ask questions to someone you meet while traveling on a tour, make polite conversation, or even get you out of a scary situation. Keep it handy and even take screenshots of common phrases in case you don’t have a connection.
6) TripIt
Last but not least, Tripit is a great app to keep all your travel itineraries organized into one. You can also share your flight confirmations, hotel bookings, and other plans with friends and family, so they know where you are. Never miss a flight or lose a booking number ever again!
When you travel on a tour, your program will help you figure out a lot of the obstacles. But, for the times when you’re out on your own, these apps will save you!
