Finally buying that backpack you’ll be needing for your long trip is one of the most equally exciting and frustrating experiences of travelling. You’ve seen so many pictures of people backpacking, and all of them look so comfortable and happy with their bags on. The truth is, carrying a backpack can be a real pain at times. Therefore, you want to make sure your travel backpack comes with all the qualities necessary to make your trip as easy as possible:

Size:

This is a huge one, no pun intended. The size of your backpack can literally make or break you when you’re actually out backpacking. Though many people would think it’s best to go smaller than bigger, keep in mind that if you go too far in any one direction with size, it could be a problem. Getting something too big will really weigh you down, whereas getting something to small can limit you with the lack of room you’ll have to fit stuff you’ve bought on your journey.

That being said, a good way to determine if a backpack is the right size for you is simply how it looks on your back. Ask a friend to come with you. If it looks awkward, it’s not the right size. Backpacks are measured in liters, and you can get something anywhere between 35 and 80. Don’t care so much about how much you can fit inside, but instead what’s appropriate for your own stature.

Proper Support:

Does it feel comfortable? If you even have to question that, then get a different bag. Most backpacks come with a solid, flat frame on the back to help keep your back straight. Additionally, the straps should be well padded and adjustable (to an extent), so you can wear your bag correctly on your body. Lastly, a truly supportive travel backpack will have a strap around the waist, to provide you with even more comfort and control. When you try the backpack on, everything should fit on the right spots of your body.

Material:

What material is your bag made of? Most travel backpacks are waterproof to some extent, so you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting drenched. However, this might be the same material that will make you sweat loads. Sometimes, the straps can be made with mesh, which can be uncomfortable and leave marks on your skin. Make sure your travel backpack feels alright.

The Look:

While it’s definitely not the most essential thing, make sure you get a backpack you love. This thing is likely going to be your life for a while. Be patient when it comes to finding something with the colors and style that you want. You should leave that store being just as excited to wear the thing as you are backpacking itself!

Extra Features:

Many people enjoy the extra features that come with a good backpack. Some like to have tons of pockets on the outside and hidden on the inside. Some prefer to have just a giant space, with very little pockets. Decide what’s right for you.

Most travel backpacks will also come with some gadgets, like a whistle, or a waterproof tarp to throw over it. Some even come with a handle, or extra straps to tighten it in all the right places. In addition to looking for a bag that has what you like, you might want to also check if the bag has zippers which can be locked.

Although searching for a travel backpack can be an exhausting experience, don’t settle for any bag that’s not perfect for you!
