Seoul is a fast-paced, unique, and exciting city that’s often overlooked by its nearby counterparts. For a long time, visitors would choose Tokyo or Beijing instead of Seoul. But, that’s changing quickly. Many travelers are choosing to either extend their layovers (which is a good idea since Incheon Airport is one of the most convenient airports in the world), or come visit here for weeks at a time. If you’re new to Seoul, then here’s what you need to know before you go.
Explore the History
Seoul is full of interesting bits of history everywhere you look. Though the city is one of the most modern in the world, it’s no surprise seeing an old palace or temple squeezed between skyscrapers or high-tech buildings. Though the modern stuff is cool, don’t miss out on exploring the antiquity. Check out Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is conveniently located next to Insadong, a cultural shopping street. Visit the Gwanghwamun area, which is full of museums, like the King Sejong Museum and the National Folk Museum of Korea. You can also do a temple stay, attend a tea ceremony, or rock some Hanbok, traditional Korean dress. Of course, if you do a tour of Seoul, you’ll be able to see a lot more!
Cafes Everywhere!
The cafe culture in Seoul is something like you would see in Paris…but just a little bit different. On every street, you’ll find an endless block of cute cafes. The coffee and sweet breads are really good, and you can sit for hours chatting with friends. They are very popular hang out spots on weekends and evenings. Seoul also has a ton of themed cafes, like the raccoon cafe, Blind Alley, where you can actually play with real raccoons!
Shopping, Shopping, and More Shopping
Seoul is a place to do A LOT of shopping. With adorable stores and boutiques everywhere, as well as major shopping streets, there’s something to buy all over the city. The main shopping districts in the city are Myeong Dong, Gangnam, Hongdae, Itaewon, Insadong, Namdaemun, and Dongdaemun, and a few others sprinkled all over. Don’t miss out on buying accessories, souvenirs, makeup, skincare products, and little toys!
Find Places to Relax
As we mentioned before, Seoul is a fast-paced city. With one of the best subway systems in the world, you can get anywhere in the city in a flash. Though, occasionally, it feels nice to take a break from all the hustle and bustle. Luckily, Seoul has a lot of places to relax. Visit the Han River Park, and take a boat on the water. Walk by the Cheongnyangni Stream, or visit a Jimjilbang, which is a Korean bath house. Get a scrub down, soak in the jacuzzis, and have some ramen to warm you up.
Oh…the Food (and Drinks)
Korean food is nothing short of amazing, or “ma-shi-ki-ta.” Visit a small Korean shop, which is like Korean fast food, and order a “bibimbap” or “kimchi bokkeumbap.” Enjoy the plethora of free side dishes and water. If you’re feeling a bit hungrier, then head to a Korean barbecue restaurant, or try some “dak galbi.” When you’re done eating, head to a local convenience store, GS25 or CU, where you can grab some Soju, Makgeolli, or Cass Fresh, and drink with your buddies on the plastic tables and chairs outside. And, don’t forget to try the spicy street food while you’re at it!
Seoul is a vibrant, modern city that still holds onto its history and culture. Though it’s a big, you can see a major portion of it by doing some sightseeing on a tour.
