Q: A friend and I are heading to Santorini & Mykonos in June. What are your suggestions on where to stay & what to do?
Yassou Casey,
You are going to have a fantastic time! My seven years in Greece saw me fall in love with the people, the food, the places, the culture and the scenic beauty. I hope this helps you enhance your time. While you’re here check out our Greece bucket lists, tour perks and culinary delights for loads more info on Greece.
Santorini is one of my favourite places in the world, so enjoy.
Efharistó polí,
Murray
Athens
At first Athens seems tired and run down but trust me when I say it will grow on you if you give it a chance. The people are lovely, the food is amazing and the scenery is world class. As far as sight-seeing goes you must visit the Pantheon and Acropolis. Tour Amigo recommends you take one of the many free walking tours throughout the city.
The Plaka area is touristy but has a cleaner and modern feel than other parts of the city. Monastiraki is also a haven for tourists, however has a lot of restaurants, markets and shopping.
A great place to stay is AthenStyle Hostel right in the heart of Monastiraki, where you can experience the true Athenian culture.
Mykonos
Paradise Beach is the place to party in Mykonos. All the clubs and bars are here so just know ahead of time it will be a happening place and really noisy. If that is not your scene we suggest staying in town
Tropicana: Check it out in the EARLY afternoon. Not later. It gets real messy.
Guapa Loca: Great for a day party and Brazilian dancing. Keep an eye out for the themed parties.
Cavo Paradise: This is the place to club but watch out for the long lines. Pre purchase your tickets.
Paradise club: Prepare for line ups and an awesome time. Pre purchase your tickets.
Rhapsody Bar: Visit for the strong strawberry mojitos or long island ice teas. Enjoy the beautiful views from Little Venice.
Room 101: Have a bucket and a dance.
Skandi Bar: Climb the stairs to get to the club. Great Music and the place to be. Arrive just about 12ish as it will get busy quick.
Opa Taverna: This is a little tricky to find but when you arrive make sure to try the cheese sagnaki, seafood plate to share and their lamb.
Santorini
Stay in Fira at Hotel Antonia.
Go to Oia and watch sunset from castle ruins. Grab yourself a Gyros and bottle of Nikteri, which is local Santorini white wine.
You absolutely must, must, must, go to Fanari Restaurant and try the lamb kleftico, lobster speghetti, shrimp sagnaki and zucchini balls. No exceptions, this is a must!
The Highlander Santorini and is where you can meet the friendly owners, say hello to Christine and Yannis who are usually there each night.
Go to Gold and White for your jewellery. This place also features amazing hospitality and local Jewellery.
Have a pre-dinner drink at Tropical Bar and say hello to Jeannie. Enjoy the Strawberry daiquiris as you relax out on the balcony.
Things to Do in Santorini
Hit up Perissa (black) beach and also check out the red beach, which also has Akrotiri ruins and is rumoured to be the remains of the lost city of Atlantis.
Adventurers can hike the volcano and expect great views and amazing experience. If you’re going to swim in hot springs, which to be honest are really warm springs, we suggest you don’t wear white clothing or jewellery as the sulfur in water will stain.
Hiring a car during your time in Santorini is a fantastic idea. I like the Jeeps or a dune buggy. Don’t get a quad. Trust me.
Food
Try the mythos, lamb kleftico, gyros, cheese saganaki, and octopus
